The speedrunning community of classic The Legend of Zelda games has made an unexpected discovery: a new glitch has been found in the iconic The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time that allows Link to destroy boulders using a regular bottle of water.
How the trick works
To trigger the bug, the player needs to pour water from a bottle at a precisely timed moment right after attacking a boulder. Researchers found that a similar effect works not only with water, but also when releasing bugs from a bottle.
New possibilities for speedruns
The same bug was also reproduced in The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask. Using this technique opens up significant advantages:
- The ability to bypass obstacles and reach inaccessible locations much earlier in the story;
- A chance to defeat bosses without the weapons intended for them;
- The possibility of defeating Ganondorf even without using Light Arrows.
The discovery is expected to significantly change routes and strategies in speedruns of both games. It is noted that the trick works both in the Nintendo 64 originals and in the Nintendo Switch Online versions, but is unavailable in the 3D remakes for Nintendo 3DS.
