Players are increasingly canceling Nintendo Switch Online subscriptions due to rising prices

Over 40% of players are canceling subscriptions to gaming services, including Nintendo Switch Online, due to rising prices and personal budget optimization.

Rising prices hit gamers' wallets

Players canceling subscriptions to gaming services such as Nintendo Switch Online, Xbox Game Pass, and PlayStation Plus are now significantly more likely to cite rising service costs as the main reason than at the beginning of the year. This is evidenced by fresh data from the analytics agency Circana, released by analyst Mat Piscatella.

According to a study of the US video game consumer market, over 40% of users who canceled subscriptions cited price as the decisive factor. This is a noticeably higher figure compared to the first quarter of the year.

Nintendo Switch Online hit by budget constraints

Interestingly, among users of the Nintendo platform, this trend turned out to be the most noticeable:

  • 50% of players who canceled their Nintendo Switch Online subscription in recent months chose the option "like the service, but the cost no longer fits the budget" (at the beginning of the year, this was 40%).
  • For Xbox Game Pass Essential and PS Plus Essential subscriptions, the share of such users reached 40% (compared to 37% in the first quarter).

Analysts emphasize that these statistics do not necessarily indicate a sharp drop in the total number of subscribers. However, they clearly show that people are giving up services not due to a lack of engaging games or content, but precisely due to the high cost of living and constant price increases in the gaming industry.
