The retrowave roguelike action game Mega City Force from indie developers has officially reached consoles, launching on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S. The game immerses players in a grim retrofuturistic metropolis overrun by crime, with a powerful megacorporation lurking in the shadows.
Gameplay Features
In Mega City Force, players choose agents with unique weapons and special abilities and head out to procedurally generated levels to fight off waves of criminals and dangerous bosses. Thanks to procedural generation variety, each playthrough becomes unique. Beating the game for the first time unlocks a new difficulty level and additional gear sets along with legendary skins for the heroes.
Console Enhancements and Local Co-op
The main highlight of the console release is the updated local same-screen cooperative mode ("couch co-op"), allowing players to clean up the city streets together with a friend. The developers significantly improved this mode specifically for consoles and optimized the controls for comfortable gamepad play.
Visual Style and Soundtrack
- Pixel Art: The visual style is inspired by action movies and arcade games of the 80s and 90s.
- Synthwave: The soundtrack features tracks from well-known artists, including timecop1983 and sublunar, which are unlocked by finding cassette tapes in the game.
Mega City Force is already available for purchase in digital storefronts, including the Nintendo eShop.
