The legendary Super Mario 64 remains one of the most influential games in the industry's history. Even decades later, developers and enthusiasts continue to explore the internal mechanics of Nintendo's masterpiece and port it to unexpected platforms.
An Impossible Port for the Atari Jaguar
An enthusiast going by the handle Budfolk decided to see what Mario's iconic 3D adventure would look like on the infamous 64-bit Atari Jaguar console, released in 1993. To bring this project to life, the developer built an engine from scratch in pure assembly.
The technical implementation is impressive: Jaguar's two proprietary RISC processors handle the main rendering load, while the Motorola 68000 chip is responsible for game logic.
Current Project Progress
Although the graphics are somewhat inferior to the Nintendo 64 original, the project already demonstrates solid results. Currently, four locations have been ported:
- Bob-omb Battlefield;
- Courtyard around Princess Peach's castle;
- Tiny-Huge Island;
- The first floor of the castle.
This fan experiment once again proves the skill of the retro community and the flexibility of Nintendo's classic game design.
