Colossal Upgrade for the Iconic RPG
The Digital Foundry team has published its detailed technical breakdown of the updated version of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered for the Switch 2 console. As a reminder, CD PROJEKT RED released this enhancement as a free upgrade for all owners of the original game.
Experts called porting the game to the new hardware a "colossal leap forward" compared to the first-generation Switch version. Thanks to new technologies, the game looks and runs significantly better.
Key Details and Technical Features:
- DLSS Technology: in docked mode, the game uses DLSS-like upscaling, delivering a dynamic 1080p resolution.
- Handheld Mode: runs at resolutions up to 720p, maintaining improved shadows and textures.
- World Detail: the number of NPCs in cities has significantly increased, with improvements to vegetation, environmental geometry, and texture quality.
- Lighting: shading and lighting effects have undergone major improvements, although some filtering artifacts are still visible on shadows.
- Frame Rate: the game targets a 40 fps cap by default in both handheld and docked modes, though drops are possible in the heaviest scenes.
- Settings Flexibility: in the Switch 2 system menu, the display can be switched from 120 Hz to 60 Hz to achieve a locked and stable 30 fps.
The remastered Witcher 3 on Switch 2 delivers a qualitatively new experience when playing one of the decade's best role-playing games in a portable format.
