Digital Foundry Released a Technical Analysis of Stellar Blade on Switch 2

Digital Foundry tested Stellar Blade on Switch 2: how the game runs in handheld and docked modes and what frame generation is capable of.

The Digital Foundry team has published a detailed technical breakdown of the action game Stellar Blade for the new Switch 2 console, comparing the game to the original PlayStation 5 version. The specialists tested handheld and docked modes, as well as the game's performance with frame generation enabled and disabled.

How the Game Runs on Switch 2

Digital Foundry's overall verdict is that the game has been ported to the new hardware relatively successfully, thanks to the flexibility of Unreal Engine 4. Visually, the game is very close to the PS5 version, though not without compromises.

  • Target Performance: The game targets 60 fps through the use of frame generation, which transforms a base 30 fps into a smooth 60 fps.
  • Without Frame Generation: The game demonstrates a fluctuating framerate in the 35–45 fps range.
  • Graphics and Detail: Some environmental elements, particularly vegetation, have been simplified or removed; shadows, lighting, and reflections are of lower quality.
  • Object Pop-in: In large locations, sudden pop-in of objects is noticeable.
  • Handheld Mode: The internal resolution is only 360p, which is upscaled using DLSS. The image looks somewhat blurry, but entirely acceptable for handheld play.

During intense combat and in some cutscenes, frame drops occur, but the system quickly recovers to stable figures.
