Danganronpa Creator Admits: Sad Scenes in Games Aren't Done Until They Make Him Cry

Danganronpa creator Kazutaka Kodaka admitted that he considers sad scenes in games finished only when they make him cry himself.

Kazutaka Kodaka, creator of the cult series Danganronpa and Master Detective Archives: RAIN CODE, is known for his emotional stories filled with dramatic moments and unexpected losses. As it turns out, the developer approaches the creation of sad scenes with extreme meticulousness.

The Secret of Emotional Impact

In an interview with Famitsu, Kodaka shared details of his creative process. According to him, sad episodes are considered complete only when they make him cry during testing.

  • Kodaka personally selects the musical accompaniment for each scene.
  • He carefully fine-tunes character facial expressions and edits the script.
  • The main criterion for success is a genuine tear from the developer during a test playthrough of the game.

“When I finish working on a project, I work on it until I cry myself. All those scenes that make players cry were created specifically for that purpose. When a tear quietly rolls down my cheek during testing—only then do I consider the scene complete. For me, this is an unbreakable rule,” the game designer noted.
