Creator of Celeste and TowerFall Explains Sudden Disappearance of Games from Xbox

Maddy Thorson, developer of cult indie games Celeste and TowerFall, explained why both projects disappeared from the Xbox digital store as part of a boycott.

Removal of games from the Xbox store

Maddy Thorson, developer of the popular indie hits Celeste and TowerFall, explained the sudden disappearance of both projects from the Xbox digital store. As it turned out, this was a deliberate decision by the creators, not a technical glitch.

Reasons for the boycott

In a statement on the Bluesky social network, Thorson noted that the games were removed from sale on the Microsoft platform in support of the BDS (Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions) movement. The movement aims to boycott and sanction companies linked to supporting the Israeli government during the war in Gaza.

Are the games available on other platforms?

The following is currently known:

  • Both games have been removed from the Xbox digital store.
  • The projects remain available for purchase on other platforms, including the Nintendo eShop for Nintendo Switch owners.
  • Players who previously purchased Celeste or TowerFall on Xbox retain access to download and play them in their libraries.
