Capcom reveals details of Onimusha: Way of the Sword for Switch 2

Capcom shared new details about Onimusha: Way of the Sword for Switch 2. The developers explained the choice of Miyamoto Musashi and the lack of connection to past games.

The new installment of the action series Onimusha: Way of the Sword is coming to the Nintendo Switch 2 on September 4, 2026. At the center of the dark fantasy story will be Miyamoto Musashi — a young samurai whose legend is forever etched in the history of Japan. He will fight the Genma demons who have invaded Kyoto during the Edo period.

Why Miyamoto Musashi?

In a recent interview, project director Satoru Nihei shared interesting details about the choice of the main character. Miyamoto Musashi is not a fictional character, but a legendary Japanese swordsman, philosopher, and strategist who did not lose a single one of his 62 duels.

According to Nihei, the team was guided by several factors:

  • Musashi's historical background is perfectly suited for implementing new gameplay mechanics, as he used any means and environment to win.
  • Musashi strives to reach the top solely through his own strength. His forced use of the mystical Oni Gauntlet creates an interesting contrast.
  • This allows showing the hero from a different perspective compared to the previous protagonists of the Onimusha series.

Is the game connected to previous installments?

Satoru Nihei also answered a question that worried many fans. Although Way of the Sword is the next full-fledged installment of the Onimusha franchise, it does not have any direct plot connections to the previous games. However, the developers have not forgotten about dedicated fans:

  • The game will feature respectful references to the classic games of the series.
  • Some enemies were created based on opponents from old installments so that fans can feel a familiar atmosphere.

The release of Onimusha: Way of the Sword will take place simultaneously on Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
