The last decade has been exceptionally eventful and productive for Capcom. The Japanese publisher successfully alternates releases of new numbered installments in the iconic Resident Evil series with modern remakes of classic games that are highly acclaimed by critics and players alike.
What happens when the classics run out?
Discussions have long been underway among franchise fans that classic releases in the series will run out sooner or later. The remakes will inevitably catch up with the modern timeline, and Capcom will have to adapt its development schedule and release strategies.
As it turns out, the developers have already considered this scenario in advance. According to one of Capcom's lead producers, Jun Takeuchi, the studio is not sitting idly by:
"We are gradually preparing for this moment."
The future of the horror franchise
Although specific details of the plan are still being kept secret, fans are hoping for several possible directions of development:
- Full-fledged spin-offs and reimaginings of lesser-known games in the series, such as Code: Veronica or the Outbreak series;
- Accelerated development of fundamentally new numbered installments;
- Development of new projects and sub-series on the RE Engine for current platforms.
In any case, the horror series remains the company's flagship, so players will certainly not be left without terrifying adventures.
