Inspiration from Survival Horror Classics and Extraction Shooters
The producer of the upcoming action horror game ANOMALITH, Gai Kidokoro, shared interesting details about the game's development, sources of inspiration, and the reasons for choosing an anime style in an interview with Automaton-Media.
According to the producer, the Resident Evil series served as the foundation for the core gameplay mechanics, as its basic control and world-interaction system proved closest to the concept of ANOMALITH. Meanwhile, for the gameplay loop—where the player embarks on an excursion, gathers supplies, and returns to base—the developers looked to Escape from Tarkov.
Why Anime Aesthetics?
Despite serious sources of inspiration in the realistic horror genre, the FuRyu team decided to give the game a distinct anime style. Kidokoro explained this decision through both practical and creative considerations:
- Competition in the Japanese market: It would be difficult for a new game from the company to compete in the photorealistic graphics segment, whereas the anime style meets the demands of the audience.
- Contrast and sense of threat: According to the producer, while muscular heroes like Leon or Chris from Resident Evil look cool and confident, fragile anime girls convey the sense of mortal danger, dread, and the fragility of human life in the face of otherworldly anomalies much better.
The release of ANOMALITH is scheduled for October 29, 2026 on Switch 2.
