Scandal at Gamescom 2026: Organizers' Response
Following a wave of outrage from the community and developers, the organizers of the Gamescom expo released an official apology for their previous response to equipment thefts from indie booths. The initial statement drew a storm of criticism, as instead of real assistance and empathy, it shifted blame onto the victims themselves and suggested ordering paid security.
"We are sorry": Admitting Mistakes
In a new address, the exhibition management admitted their mistake and assured that they have initiated a direct dialogue with the affected studios.
«Our initial response did not strike the right tone and failed to show the affected parties the empathy they deserved. We are truly sorry. Such a theft is more than just material loss... We understand how much this cost you, and we should have said so from the very first minute», — the official statement reads.
What Steps Gamescom Plans to Take
To prevent similar incidents in the future, the organizers promised to take a number of measures:
- Conduct a thorough security audit in the independent developer zones;
- Organize a round table with developers to collect feedback and suggestions;
- Improve overnight security protocols for the pavilions.
Despite the apology, many industry participants note that this is not enough. Due to the thefts, studios lost not only valuable hardware, but also early project builds, as well as the opportunity to fully showcase their games to hundreds of thousands of visitors. Meanwhile, the question of paying financial compensation to the victims still remains open.
