The updated revision of the Nintendo Switch 2 console for the European market has already begun reaching customers, and enthusiasts have already torn down the device to uncover all the differences from the launch model.
EU requirements and the right to repair
As a reminder, Nintendo developed the new revision of the Switch 2 and accompanying accessories in response to the European Union's "Right to Repair" directive and updated battery regulations. The regulators' main goal was to ensure that users could easily replace power cells themselves without having to contact authorized service centers.
What the teardown of the new model revealed
According to the results of the device teardown, Nintendo's engineers had to make noticeable changes to the console's internal design:
- Easier battery replacement: the battery is no longer glued in tightly, which significantly simplifies its maintenance.
- Reduced capacity: due to the addition of a protective casing and connectors for quick replacement, the battery itself became slightly more compact and has less capacity.
- Increased weight: additional mountings and the modular structure made the updated console somewhat heavier than the original version.
Despite a slight compromise in battery life and ergonomics, European gamers received a console that is much easier to service in the long run.
