Sonic Team Head Prefers New Games Over Remakes and Remasters

Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka explained why the studio is focused on creating new games rather than remakes of classics.

Moving Only Forward

Many fans of the blue hedgehog have dreamed for years of the return of iconic entries in the series, particularly a remake or a high-quality remaster of Sonic Adventure. However, Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka has a different vision for the future of the franchise.

In an interview with Automaton, Iizuka shared the team's approach to allocating their efforts. According to him, the studio's resources are limited, so the team prefers to create entirely new projects rather than spend effort reimagining the past:

  • Focus on fresh ideas: instead of restoring old games, the studio wants to develop the franchise in new directions;
  • Limited resources: a full-fledged remake requires a large number of developers who are better utilized in creating future installments.

Therefore, players waiting for the return of classic adventures will likely have to set their sights on future original releases from SEGA and Sonic Team.
