NieR:Automata Director Believes He Makes "Normal Games for Normal People"

NieR:Automata director Yoko Taro shared that he always tries to create normal games for normal people, despite their cult status among a niche audience.

A Peculiar Vision of Development

NieR:Automata director Yoko Taro has long achieved cult status thanks to his esoteric ideas, unconventional mechanics, and bizarre plots. However, the developer himself does not believe he creates anything strange or incomprehensible.

In an interview, Taro spoke about the development process and how the audience perceives his projects:

“To be honest, I think I make normal games aimed at normal people. But in the end, when I release these normal games, weird people think they're weird and enjoy them. I guess that means there's something wrong with me.”

The game designer also admitted that during the creation of the cult hit NieR:Automata, he was not targeting any specific demographic group, but simply did what he wanted while trying to stay off the radar of Square Enix management as much as possible.
