Final Fantasy VII Remake Director Insisted on Creating Each Part as a "Complete Experience"

Final Fantasy VII Remake series director Naoki Hamaguchi explained why each game in the trilogy had to be a coherent and complete project.

Final Fantasy VII Remake Trilogy Development Philosophy

The remake series of the cult classic Final Fantasy VII continues its steady path onto the Switch 2 console, with the final part subtitled Revelation preparing for release on April 8, 2027. Despite the massive project reimagining the original game by splitting it into three parts, the developers did not want to turn each release into a mere cliffhanger.

In an interview with Edge Magazine, series director Naoki Hamaguchi shared how important it was for him to make each game a self-contained work.

"An Uncompromising Prerequisite"

Hamaguchi noted that this principle was inviolable for him from the very beginning of planning the entire trilogy:

"Even for a multi-part project, delivering a full and complete experience in each individual game was an uncompromising premise from the very beginning. The greatest danger in such series is when the creators think: \"there will be more parts ahead, so for now we can stop here and save our energy.\""

What This Means for Players

The Square Enix team chose the harder path instead of simplifying content, making each episode of the trilogy feel like a full-fledged major RPG:

  • Each game received its own complete story arc, a rich open world, and unique gameplay mechanics.
  • The trilogy's finale, Final Fantasy VII Revelation, will be released simultaneously on all platforms, including Switch 2, on April 8, 2027.
