Finding the Perfect Balance for the Combat System
Teruki Endo, battle director of the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy, discussed the development of the series' combat system in an interview with EDGE magazine. While the original Final Fantasy VII was a classic turn-based RPG, the modern remake strives to seamlessly blend tactical turn-based elements with dynamic real-time battles.
According to Endo, he spent the entire duration of working on the three parts of the remake trying to find the ideal balance between both approaches:
"Across all three games, we continuously refined this balance through trial and error. The challenge is that I still haven't found a single 'right answer' for myself. I think that's one of the reasons why I was able to work tirelessly on all three parts without losing interest."
The Trilogy Finale Approaches
As a reminder, the final part—Final Fantasy VII Revelation—will be released on Nintendo Switch 2 and other platforms on April 8, 2027. It will feature the culmination of the clash between Cloud and Sephiroth, flights on the Highwind airship, and an effort to save the planet from Meteor's fall.
