Digital Foundry Analyzed the Metal Gear Solid 4 Remaster on Switch and Switch 2

Digital Foundry analyzed the performance of the Metal Gear Solid 4 remaster on Nintendo Switch and Switch 2. The version for the new console proved to be a pleasant surprise.

With the release of the METAL GEAR SOLID: MASTER COLLECTION Vol. 2 collection, the legendary spy action games Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker have finally become available on modern hybrid consoles. The Digital Foundry team prepared a detailed technical breakdown of the remaster of the fourth installment and compared its performance on the original Nintendo Switch and the new Switch 2.

How the Game Runs on the Original Switch

The version for the first-generation Switch generally performed well compared to the PS3 original, but not without compromises:

  • The frame rate is locked at 30 fps.
  • The game runs at a higher resolution than on PlayStation 3, but shadow quality is somewhat inferior to the original.

The Main Surprise — The Switch 2 Version

Experts called the Switch 2 version "the biggest pleasant surprise" among all platforms:

  • A special "Adjusted Mode" provides a noticeable boost in graphical quality and significantly better anti-aliasing.
  • Most of the time, the game delivers a smooth frame rate close to 60 fps.

Thus, Switch 2 owners got a great opportunity to enjoy Kojima's cult classic with a modern level of smoothness and clarity.
