Former GTA 6 developer explains why the game is unlikely to release on Nintendo Switch 2

A former GTA 6 developer expressed doubts about the feasibility of releasing the game on Nintendo Switch 2 due to technical challenges.

Former Grand Theft Auto 6 developer Jérémy Hartvick shared his thoughts regarding the possible release of the new installment in the crime franchise on the Nintendo Switch 2 console. In his view, porting such a massive and technologically demanding project to a hybrid portable platform currently makes no practical sense.

Technical Limitations and Rockstar's Priorities

Hartvick worked at Rockstar Games until 2020, so while he does not possess current insider information regarding management's modern plans, his development experience highlights fundamental challenges:

  • Project Scale: GTA 6 is being built to make maximum use of current-generation hardware capabilities, including complex artificial intelligence systems, physics, and visual effects.
  • Resource Optimization: Adapting such a massive game for the Switch 2 portable chipset would require colossal compromises in graphics, draw distance, and crowd density.

Despite the substantial increase in power of the Nintendo Switch 2 compared to its predecessor, the developers are focused on optimizing for home platforms, where the game's release remains the studio's main priority.
