The detective visual novel series Danganronpa, which launched in 2010, gained cult status thanks to its dark atmosphere and gripping courtroom investigations. The sinister black-and-white bear Monokuma became the franchise's main symbol. However, the creators recently revealed that the iconic mascot came to life in literally just a few minutes.

Monokuma's Design in Just 5 Minutes

In an interview with DenFamiNicoGamer, series creator Kazutaka Kodaka talked about the character's creation process:

«In the concept, we often used the words \"black and white\", so we wanted to make the character monochrome. I asked character designer Rui Komatsuzaki to draw a bear that was half white and half black. I also added: \"Make one half of the bear extremely cute, and the other really vicious\". The Monokuma we know today was ready in just five minutes. Since then, I haven't made a single revision».

The Main Musical Theme in 20 Minutes

As it turned out, it wasn't just Monokuma's appearance that was created at lightning speed. Franchise composer Masafumi Takada admitted that he wrote the game's main soundtrack literally right before the deadline:

«Not a single bar of this song was written until the day of the deadline. The only thing we initially agreed on was to include a voice shouting \"Danganronpa\" so that everyone would remember the name of the then-unknown game. We started writing the track with only this idea and finished it in about 20 minutes».

That's how, thanks to spontaneous inspiration and tight deadlines, key elements of the game were born, which later captivated millions of players around the world.
