Monster Hunter series producer Ryozo Tsujimoto spoke in an interview with VGC about the reasons for releasing Monster Hunter Wilds on the new Nintendo Switch 2 console. The main factor was the desire to revive the classic experience of local co-op hunting, familiar to fans since the era of handheld consoles.
Return to the Roots of Handheld Hunting
According to Tsujimoto, the tradition of gathering together at one table for shared hunts is deeply rooted in the franchise's history, especially in Japan during the PSP and Nintendo 3DS eras. The portability of the Switch 2 makes it easy to recreate this unique social experience.
The producer also highlighted the importance of crossplay, which opens up new opportunities for local gaming within the same household:
- Players on Switch 2 can hunt together via a direct Local Wireless connection.
- Full crossplay support allows playing together in the living room, even if one player is using a PS5 and the other is on a handheld Switch 2.
- The Switch 2 version releases with all content updates, including the Grand Hub, the return of the monster Lagiacrus, and the collaboration event with FINAL FANTASY XIV Online.
The release of Monster Hunter Wilds on Nintendo Switch 2 is scheduled for December 4, 2026.
