Major reorganization in Microsoft's gaming division
Xbox continues its large-scale internal transformations. As part of a new strategy and restructuring, it was decided to consolidate more management control around the acquired Activision.
The main news for fans of classic games is that legendary studio Rare — creators of such iconic Nintendo 64 franchises as Banjo-Kazooie, GoldenEye 007, and Perfect Dark — will now report directly to Activision leadership.
Who else is affected by the changes?
The changes in the management structure have affected not only Rare. The new Activision management vertical now includes:
- Halo Studios (formerly known as 343 Industries) — developers of the Halo universe;
- Rare — creators of Sea of Thieves and classic hits;
- World's Edge — the studio overseeing the Age of Empires strategy series.
Microsoft aims to make more efficient use of Activision's resources and structure, but how exactly this will affect the development of future games and the preservation of the studios' classic legacy remains to be seen over time.
